CONNECTING CENTRALITIES. NEW MARKET IN BERGA
Diploma, 2016-2017 | ETSAB (Barcelona)
The project which conclude the 6 years I have been studying architecture with, consists in an urban regeneration project in Berga, where I have lived most of my life, through a key piece for the town, as it is the Market.
The small town had always been characterized by a lineal centrality around the Carrer Major and extended through the whole historical centre, turning it into a social meeting space for the town inhabitants. Nowadays, this area has lost its condition as a centre, due to its degradation and because all the activities have been moved to two close areas, becoming two new cores. The city doesn’t have a social centre any more, but some disseminated activities spread between this three important areas, which don’t have any connection between them. This is the starting point of the project.
There is the need of a regeneration of the turning point between these three polarities in order to communicate and connect them, and bring a well solved centre to the town, which can be again a social interaction and meeting point for the citizens.
This way, all the market area will be a big public space which, taking profit of the topography, connects the different ranges and becomes the gate to the old town, relating it with the rest of the city.
